Free streaming apps for Canada (2024)

Stream content for free (and legally) in Canada, with the following apps, some of which are ad-supported.

CBC Gem – Features a large library of current and past CBC produced titles, including a number of current UK/International programs that they have secured the Canadian rights to.

CBC Sports – Sports news app which includes live streaming of a variety of Canadian and international sports tournaments (figure skating, aquatics, etc).

The CBC has the Canadian rights to the 2024 Paris Olympics, so this or perhaps a new stand-alone app will likely be the go-to for 24/7 streaming of Canadian Olympic live coverage.

FYI: Games from the new PWHL are live-streamed and replays can be accessed on-demand on CBC Sports.

Citytv – Offers a wide variety of Canadian and American titles that Citytv has the broadcast rights to, including The Bachelor, Hell’s Kitchen, and the “Law & Order” and “Chicago” franchises.

New episodes are only available free on-demand, for one week after initial airing, after which the episode becomes locked and can only be accessed by those who have an account with a TV/cable subscription.

CTV – CTV offers a wide selection of Canadian and US content. Check the “Free Episodes” section for select current titles can be streamed for free.

A number of CTV/Bell-owned properties are on the platform and can be streamed free.

New episodes for some shows get locked 1 week after airing. Full on-demand access is available to those who have an account with a TV/cable subscription.

Global TV – Most current content is locked. Like Citytv’s app, locked episodes can be viewed by those who have an account with a TV/cable subscription.

There are a few shows however, including Saturday Night Live, which can be viewed on-demand for 1 week after airing until it becomes locked.

Has a “FREEPLAY” section which includes a catalogue of Global’s older television shows like Due South and Mr. D., that can be streamed without an account.

Hoopla – Stream audiobooks, music, and video. Has a variety of tv shows and movies including a fair selection of UK and international titles. Content can be downloaded for offline viewing. Available for those who have a library card with a participating local library.
